IJsselstein is a cozy ancient city in Utrecht area.
It’s a special city and its specialty begins with its name. The first 2 capital letters in the name – is not a mistake. Actually, historically it was one character “ÿ”. But with the time one letter divided in to two "I J". Since the Dutch began to use computers, instead of typewriters, where the Old Dutch letter “ÿ” didn’t exist, IJsselstein officially got its name in such a peculiar way.
Geographical position of IJsselstein has lots of advantages: On the one hand, it’s close to a big city Utrecht, just 30 min by tram or 10 min by car. On the other hand, it’s a lovely place where people can enjoy quiet life.
The city lays on the river IJssel. It had a fortification which in Dutch was called a 'Stein'. Hence its name.
Historically it’s a masterpiece of an ancient Europe. Each house in the center of IJsselstein has a long history… There are some buildings with pieces of walls dating from the XIII century.
Here you can also see a unique scale. Nowadays it’s a monument, but in ancient times it was used for weighing women to find out if there were any witches among them, as the witches weighed “0”.
Nobody knows if any were found.
As well as an interesting “Past”, IJsselstein has a very intensive “Present”. Citizens organize carnivals, fests, fairs and so on. City has a very active social life. Theaters are a big part of that life. One of them- “Pantalone” theater plays a special role in the life of Eurolinguaclub.
It’s a place where everything started. And hopefully, successfully goes on.
I want to express my gratitude to “Pantalone” theater and everybody who believed and inspired us.
